‘Maybe that’s what cooking is, you know. Home in a pocket.’
Occupational therapist Naomi really needs her new Caribbean cooking group to go well. Her participants, Ty, Daniel and Leroy, each have their own reasons for joining - and it certainly isn’t all about the food.
As the three men cautiously embrace the group, they start to share their recipes and take turns as head chef. Soon, the smells of their cooking transform the secure hospital around their kitchen, and memories of home and their lives outside begin to resurface.
With the hospital’s Family Day fast approaching and the group set to cater, their new-found trust is tested and tensions threaten to boil over. As they struggle to break the cycles of their past, Naomi is forced to reckon with whether this group can really be the recipe for change she hoped it might become.
The absorbing debut play from Bush Writers’ Group alumni Sophia Griffin, After Sunday is a searing look into the lives of four people grappling with the reality of a dehumanising system. This world premiere production is directed by Belgrade Theatre Artistic Director Corey Campbell (Romeo and Juliet), and features live cooking on stage.
